Ground-pounder with Patton in Europe. Mechanical engineer with North American and then Douglas. Renowned aviation photographer and historian. Harry Gann (full bio) was one of those folks who grew up doing one thing but through a series of fortunate steps and elbow grease ended up working in a field that was at one time a mere hobby but a love of his life – aviation photography. Along the way he documented one of the most interesting time periods in modern aviation – the 1950s and 60s, from the ground and the back seat of a variety of aircraft, but mostly from the good ol’ TA-4. Many of us who have spent some time researching and delving into our winged past, have come across his work more frequently than we may have figured. And while the bulk of his work was on Douglas and McDonnell-Douglas products (some of which – like the A3D, A4D, F4D and F5D he had a piece of the control system design work as a mech engineer) he also captured a variety of other Navy aircraft.
So presented herewith are a sample of some of his work – VAW related, that captures a slice of some of our not altogether nor well documented image-wise past. Until now.
